Start 'Em Young

Want advancement?

Consider the starting character in SOTC to be the end-point: 15 skills with a 'Superb' peak, 5 stunts.

So step back from that and come up with a Junior Centurion, following this template:

Start characters with a 10-skill 'Great' peaked pyramid and 1 stunt instead of 5.

Every time characters "advance", move them a step along this sequence:

  • Gain 1 new Average skill slot.
  • Gain 1 new Average skill slot.
  • Promote 1 existing Average skill to Fair.
  • Gain 1 new stunt.
  • Gain 1 new Average skill slot.
  • Promote 1 existing Fair skill to Good and 1 existing Average skill to Fair.
  • Gain 1 new stunt.
  • Gain 1 new Average skill slot.
  • Promote 1 existing Good skill to Great, 1 existing Fair skill to Good, and 1 existing Average skill to Fair.
  • Gain 1 new stunt.
  • Gain 1 new Average skill slot.
  • Promote 1 existing Great skill to Superb, 1 existing Good skill to Great, 1 existing Fair skill to Good, and 1 existing Average skill to Fair.
  • Gain 1 new stunt.

That's 13 increments of advancement right there, probably spread out over 13 sessions (or more!).

Once the characters attain "full Centurion" status, their skill pyramid stops growing, and you give them a new stunt every 3-6 sessions, depending on taste.
